Bio

Shane Rutherford is currently the Percussion Director/Assistant Band Director at Brazosport High School in Freeport, Texas. His primary responsibilities include teaching all percussion pedagogy from 6th-12th grade as well as assisting with the marching band, concert bands and jazz bands at Brazosport and its feeder Freeport Intermediate. Shane began his teaching career in 2013 and has spent his entire tenure at Brazosport High School. The bands at Brazosport  and Freeport are consistent UIL Sweep Stakes bands and frequently have recordings advance to the state level in the TMEA Honor Band process as well as the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series. Students in the Brazoport and Freeport bands regularly qualify for the ATSSB Region 13 Bands as well as having students routinely qualify for the Area and All-State Bands.

Shane earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Sam Houston State University, where he studied under Dr. John Lane, Dr. Matthew McInturf, Dr. Brian Gibbs, and Dr. David Cole. While at SHSU, he performed with the Bearkat Marching Band, “Old Main” Brass Choir, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Sam Houston Percussion Group. Notable performances included appearances at TMEA (2008), the CBDNA Southwestern Conference (2012), and a tour of Puerto Rico with the Symphony Orchestra (2010). While studying at Sam Houston, Shane was a member of independent percussion group Imperial Percussion Theater. He would later go on to work as part of the front ensemble staff for IPT's feeder ensemble as well as establish and serve on the front ensemble staff for Monarch Independent in their inagural year. In 2025 he will earn his Masters of Arts in Band Studies at Sam Houston State University. 

Outside of the classroom, Shane enjoys performing with community groups in the Brazosport area, including the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Brian Casey. Each summer, he is part of the orchestra for Brazosport Center Stages’ annual musical production. When he’s not making music, Shane enjoys reading, playing video games, and spending time with his wife, Alyssa, and their daughter, Logan.
