The Lesson Framework project is another major project that students start during their first summer and complete their second summer. A framework for lessons is created for the intent of teaching a piece of music (many students use their first score study, though this is not required) during the first summer session. This framework uses different lenses to look at the lesson process on a yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily scale. After designing the lesson framework, students are asked to record themselves implementing the lesson process. During the second summer session, students compile their recordings to create a video that demonstrates progress towards mastery of outcomes desired from the lesson plan process.
For my lesson framework, I chose to use a percussion ensemble since at the time I was not in charge of a concert band. I found the framework process so helpful that I did it for a couple ensembles I was look at doing in the spring of 2024, including a couple ensembles I did not end up teaching.
