One of the major reasons I decided to pursue this masters program was the ability to continue my education while being able to keep my current job and be able to apply the material I was learning right away to the benefit of my students. One of the ways that this is achieved is by designing your own major projects to be completed between your first and second summer session and between your second and third summer session. The process to determine your projects includes self assessment reflections, collaboration with other students, and consultation with professors.
After completing my first self assessment reflection, I determined that my greatest weakness was wind pedagogy. As a dedicated percussion director, I don't get to spend a lot of time with wind players. Pair that with the fact that it has been over 12 years since my methods courses, and I had to admit that I was very rusty on wind pedagogy. I decided to take lessons for a full year on clarinet with a trusted friend and mentor. Below you can find the videos/transcripts of my lessons with key concepts from each lesson, practice log, and proposal/write up for this specific project.
There was a major blessing bestowed upon our middle school program in the 2024-2025 school year. Brazosport ISD decided to change some feeder patterns and one of the resulting consequences was that our beginner students (6th grade) moved from being on their own campus to being on the same campus as our 7th and 8th grade students. This resulted in the opportunity for us to implement a mentor program with some of our 8th grade students serving as mentors for 6th grade students. While the program was not perfect, we found it to be a success and look forward to further implementing a similar program in the future.
